Community Senior Picnic

Every early summer, our community, sponsors a Senior Outdoor Picnic. The first 400 seniors to respond get free admittance and from the looks of this years' attendance, we hit that number. I think there is a $6 (six dollar) charge if you are under 62 but everyone else is free. There's music, good food, good friends and the representatives (i.e. local politicians) let us seniors know about all the wonderful benefits we seniors get to enjoy in our community. Free rides to and from our medical appointments, free food, free transportation, free energy programs (i.e. heat and air conditioning) free home repairs (such as the installation of ramps for those elderly in a wheel chair who can no longer walk up their front home stairs). The list goes on and on. There are a lot of seniors in our neighborhood and I couldn't be happier. My husband and I have been going to these annual picnics for years. We always have a good time. We enjoy meeting our neighbors, making new friends and finding out what is new and available in our community.

It's just one of the many, many reasons why, hopefully, we will never, ever move away.

The event takes place on the fairgrounds under two tents.

There's always a 50/50 raffle. If you win, you get 50% of the money collected!

We meet our local police officials.

There are several booths open to talk about local opportunities.

Hubby with some of our newfound friends and neighbors.

Excellent entertainment & music!

Self-serve food: beef or turkey burgers, fresh salad, baked beans & watermelon.

Happy neighbors! Happy food!

As you can see, turn out was great!

Our neighborhood is home to so many retirees!!

  1. Lovely to see people enjoying their community and each other. Hope the weather was nice. I hope this gives you even more comfort that America has not collapsed, very very few people are dying of literal starvation and we are not entering a depression. Soft economy and a tough one yes! But the world has not ended. Cheers and enjoy.

    1. Hi. Yes. You are right. Even during the Great Depression 75% of the people were working, had a job, had a home, food on the table etc. Only 25% of the people were out of work and suffering. The news concentrated on that 25%, still to this day. Let's not get it wrong, however. There are plenty of people today who are suffering and need our help. The elder community I showed you is served by many, many volunteers. When 'Meals On Wheels' folded up, many people volunteered to continue cooking and serving hot nutritious meals for our senior citizens. My husband is also going to volunteer 'Putting Your Skills Back To Work' and teach at a non-profit. Our town has just approved a low-cost housing project so that many of our seniors can remain living here. It's all good. BTW, the weather was spectacular. Lots of sun and warmth! Thank you for your comment.

    1. Thanks Belinda. I always make it a point to go around and talk to as many single women as I can. Almost all of them are widows and just love to talk about anything. It was a very fun time. Thank you so much for your comment.

  4. Sounds nice but I don't think all of those services are really 'free'. The money has to come from somewhere. Just saying. D.

    1. The money comes from our tax paying dollars. Plus Federal Grants. That's why those politicians were there. They want our vote.

    2. Indeed. Nothing is free! We all know that by this old age. But what a great allocation of tax dollars and I see many free goodies that the potluck offered to all.
