How I'm Preparing For America's Eventual Collapse.

If you think Trump's current tariff policies are inventive and new, think again. The exact same tariff wars came to an eventual American decline back in 1930, just as The Great Depression was underway.

One of America’s most infamous tariffs: the Smoot-Hawley Tariff, or Tariff Act of 1930, despite being widely opposed by 1,028 prominent economists, some business executives, and much of the public, was signed into law by President Herbert Hoover. Historians generally believe the tariff was responsible for a two-thirds decline in international trade and for transforming a bad recession into a global depression. For much of America’s history, tariffs were the key public policy issue; one particular Tariff of 1828 was nicknamed the “Tariff of Abominations.” Protective tariffs gave way to free trade after World War II, although sadly, protectionism and tax favoritism in trade policy seem increasingly bipartisan today. Click here for more info.

What's the definition of stupidity? It's doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result. Adding or raising up tariffs on American trade partners is not new. It has been done before with disastrous results. Read all about The Tariff of 1930 by clicking here. How then can the current admin, knowing American history, expect a different, more positive result? They can't. And unfortunately, ladies and gentlemen, America is in for an eventual collapse and another Great Depression Part Deux.

Are you prepared? Most people are not. Do you realize that China makes almost EVERYTHING that Americans need and use? Appliances, tools, drugs, clothing, shoes, cookware, necessities.....the list can go on and on and on. Do you think it's a smart move to fight with a supplier, even if corrupt, for your everyday needs, without having a back up plan? That's what we are involved in now. The current admin thinks that they are Gengus The Powerful (I made up this name but you get the idea) and all will bow to the mighty ring. Ain't gonna happen. The 104% China tariff will stay in place, y'all will be paying higher prices for just about everything, provided the supplier (China) even agrees to keep supplying. It's common sense. Think about it.

We wouldn't find ourselves in this position if the Democratic Party had even one lamebrain to run the country. They didn't. They still don't. So, my premise is this: if the current admin fails, which there is a good chance they will, what's next? Or better yet, who's next? Who else can step up to the plate and offer and perform salvation? The horrific answer is no one. That's called a 'collapse' and that is what we all are facing, in my honest opinion. I could be wrong but unfortunately I don't think so. It's all common sense. Look at the facts. Trust your own eyes and ears. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, guess what? It's the collapse of everything we ever knew.

My husband thinks I'm exaggerating or panicking. I'm not. I'm the one who has been paying the bills here for the last 44 years. I'm the one who makes the investments, makes the buying decisions, moves us forward or backward. If you ask my husband what our electricity bills are he wouldn't know. He just knows that I'm constantly screaming to turn off the lights or shut something down. I've currently gone through all our bills and when you are a couple who just lives within their needs and only subscribe to what is essential, there basically is nothing for us to cut. It is what it is. We were carrying two zero interest loans (new front door and one year's worth of propane) but I paid their balances off today ($410 and $245). Hubby also bought new tires for his car today (it was a planned-for purchase) and rather than zero finance it, I paid the $851 in full). This is no time to be carrying any sort of debt, zero interest or not.

Over the past week hubby and I stocked up on some long term foods (rice, canned fruits, vegetables and chicken) as well as some long needed supplies (hydrogen peroxide, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes etc) We're going back tomorrow to buy next winter's pellet needs as well as some dog food and yard care supplies. We're still scheduled to put in another year of our veggie & fruit garden (we'll need fertilizer and another large bag of organic dirt). I've already stocked up on seeds, perennials and pollinators. Last year I bought all new appliances (washer, dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher and stove) because I knew their prices were going up, would be difficult to purchase or buy replacement parts (our original appliances were over 10-15 years old. I donated all of them to our local church). Better to have brand new and hunker down for the count. Ditto for our yard equipment. We bought a new tractor last year. I cringe to even think what one of those would cost today. Thankfully, hubby and our neighbors share many of the yard and farm equipment. We live amongst a strong community!

My biggest concern is our health. I'm on monthly cancer-preventative medication and so far it only cost me $5 a month (I have to be on it for 5 to 10 years). My doctor wanted to put me on something stronger but that would have cost me $100 a month! Can't do it. My husband started his own heart health journey and his monthly meds come to $542. Granted Medicare Part D will kick in and pick up the tab AFTER we spend $2,000. When my husband complained about the expense to his doctor, he prescribed a substitute medication at $101 a month but it's probably not as effective as the original. Thankfully, he only has to be on these meds for 4 months. In the middle of which he is having surgery done next month. Since his operation will keep him in the hospital over night, we will have to pay around a $1600 deductible. In other words, hubby and I have some huge medical expenses coming up and we need to prepare. We just got hit with a $225 invoice for some genetic testing he needed. Our health insurance doesn't cover it.

Lastly, it will be no surprise that hubs and I, as retirees, are dependent on Social Security, Medicare and the FDIC. These are all American government programs that despite the positive rhetoric (Oh! We're not touching Social Security, Medicare or the FDIC) I don't believe a word anyone spews out of their mouths. We have savings but if everything fails, we could last on our own for around 5 to 6 years. Then we'd be forced to sell our home, for whatever it would possibly sell for, and then live on those proceeds till death do us part. We could move in with my daughter or my sister but that would be a last resort. I don't think it's funny to even think of these things. I feel we all need to ask ourselves the 'what if' questions and prepare for them accordingly. What are we going to do if all else fails? It doesn't seem so ridiculous (to me) anymore.

  1. I have to say I agree with everything you've said. The US has been heading towards the edge of a cliff for a number of years now and I don't see how anyone can fix it. This isn't a democrat or republican issue it is a total government issue that has continued to get worse every single year.
We also replaced all of our appliances over the last two years for the same reasons as you.
I'm making a list and doing a big stock up this week. It gives me a little piece of mind to have what we use regularly on hand.
Thank you for sharing all that you do to keep us informed.

    1. Thanks Lori. Each day the "news" gets worse and worse and worse. I'm almost at the point of just turning it off and whatever happens, happens. Sometimes the best thing to do is to let it fail. Best natural learning curve there is. Thank you again for your comment. Happy shopping!

  2. Like you, I do not believe a word. We have a new freezer and dishwasher. If washer and dryer fails, I have mine in storage that we could use. At least, Tommy's house is paid off. It worries me what could happen. I stocked up on lots of things that are not food.

    1. Hi Linda. Good for you! No matter what happens, prices for almost everything will be going up. Everybody is going to get hit with that 10% tariff. Amazon has already banned accepting deliveries from China. Going to be a bumpy ride! Thank goodness Tommy's house is paid for!! Thank you for your comment.

  3. Here are the many definitions of the word 'collapse'. In this instance, I'd go with #4. The American dollar is only worth 3 cents. Can a $20 bill buy what it used to buy a year ago? Four years ago? How much longer will the buck be worth that three cents? In other words, the American dollar will collapse. As will the American society. The American government right now is buying gold in massive amounts. Will it be used to back its paper money? I can see that you're just as clueless as my husband and yes! I'll take on the twenty dollar bet. But only in gold because the American twenty dollar bill is almost worthless.
1: to fall or shrink together abruptly and completely : fall into a jumbled or flattened mass through the force of external pressure
    a blood vessel that collapsed
2: to break down completely : DISINTEGRATE
… his case had collapsed in a mass of legal wreckage …
    —Erle Stanley Gardner
3: to cave or fall in or give way
    The bridge collapsed.
4: to suddenly lose force, significance, effectiveness, or worth
fears that the currency may collapse
5: to break down in vital energy, stamina, or self-control through exhaustion or disease
She came home from work and collapsed on the sofa.
especially : to fall helpless or unconscious
He collapsed on stage during the performance.
6: to fold down into a more compact shape
    a chair that collapses
a collapsing golf club that can fit into a travel bag

  5. 124% tariff on China???? Who will be able to afford things any more? People have no clue how much we have in our homes is "Made in China!" It's insane! WalMart will now become the new Saks Fifth Ave for the poor!
Wish we had more experienced people in Congress - it's a real shit-show, for sure!

    1. I feel that the current admin has seriously underestimated what they have gotten us all in to. it will be a crap shoot at first but other countries, such as Viet Nam and Thailand, who already have factories in production, may pick up the slack should China not cooperate. Trump thinks businesses will be coming and opening up factories in America. It takes 2 to 3 years to get a factory up and running. Granted we have buildings in Detroit etc but they have been seriously neglected for decades. And honestly, do Americans really want to work on assembly lines and sweat shops?

  6. We too are bothered by what we are seeing unfold before our very eyes. I’m horrified and perplexed by those who don’t see it. I’m hoping we can all make it through unscathed. Time will certainly tell.

    1. Belina, it perplexes me as to how some people still can not see the demise of America. They can't believe that anything bad can happen to us. I just came back from Aldi. Two of them, in fact. And we couldn't find some items, which are imported from Belgium in both Aldi stores. So, the unavailability has already started. We also needed 5 more bags of pellets since our regular ton of pellets (to heat our stove) has almost run out due to the very cold winter we just had. The price was $3.19 at the beginning of the winter and is now $3.89. So, we paid $3.50 more for just 5 bags. Come next winter, we need 40 bags. Or maybe 45 if it's very cold again. I can only imagine what the price will be then. God help us all.

  7. Bev, I find it very sad that people such as yourself are not fully aware of what is transpiring in America. Don't feel bad. My own sister is the same exact way. In 1913, for the first time, inflation was tracked. In 1913 whatever you bought for a dollar then, if you were to purchase it today would cost $32.30. That's an inflation increase of 3130.3%. In other words, your American dollar, that you have in your possession right now, today, is only worth three cents. "Inflation, as a persistent increase in the general price level of goods and services, didn't have a specific starting point in the U.S. It's a gradual process, but significant inflation episodes have occurred throughout U.S. history, including a major surge in the 1970s, another after World War II, and a recent spike linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Consumer Price Index (CPI), a measure of inflation, has tracked price changes since 1913, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. " You can punch in the numbers yourself at this web link: https://www.usinflationcalculator.com. Hope you're out shopping and stockpiling your needs. The collapse will come very fast. No one can predict it but as of today, prices have already risen AND some items are now unavailable. Good luck!

  8. Dear Unknown. I posted all your spiteful comments. They're so laughable but genuinely sad. You can call me whatever names you want, post whatever spew you want but time will be the ultimate guide. Obviously something is irking you. You're unhinged. Take a deep breath. An interest rate cut will only raise inflation more. The stock market is NOT the indicator of the economy. All Trump has to do is say an evil word on Monday and the markets will come crashing down. Just like the last time. That's not supply and demand. WTF cares if I know what I am doing or what I am saying? The advice is simple: prepare for a collapse and if it doesn't happen you'll be the wiser. That's all. Have good day. But before you go, take a good look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6u5TzFG_jc

  10. Dear Unknown, Donald J. Trump himself said that the Viet Nam tariff is 90%. Are you now calling The President Of The United States a liar? Here's the link: https://www.vietnam-briefing.com/news/understanding-the-us-tariff-list-implications-for-vietnam.html/

In the case of Vietnam, the Trump administration claimed that US exports to the market are charged a 90 percent tariff rate. The administration claims that this high rate has already weighted currency manipulation and trade barriers.

Accordingly, the US plans to impose an exceptionally high reciprocal tariff rate of 46 percent on imports from Vietnam, which is scheduled to take effect on April 9. Examining the list, it is evident that Vietnam’s rate is considerably higher than that of many of its export competitors, such as Bangladesh’s 37 percent rate and Thailand’s 36 percent rate. In Southeast Asia alone, Vietnam’s rate is only lower than that of Laos and Cambodia.

Unknown, you really are a sad, poor pathetic case. I only posted your UNKNOWN comments to demonstrate to the rest of my readers how possible it is, in today's era, how clueless people can be. Now go away because I will not publish any more of your ridiculous comments.

  11. Can you answer my question as to why America has put trade tariffs on Australia, which is in a trade surplus with America. For clarification a surplus means we buy more from you than you buy from us. Interested to hear your perspective on this? Samantha

    1. Hi Samantha. I'm going to answer your question in my current opinion, which has changed since I last wrote this post. Right now, I don't give a rat's ass about Donald Trump and his fu**king tariffs. They mean nothing to me nor will they disrupt my life or my pocket book. If I need something, I buy it, regardless of the price. I still shop for the best deal, lowest price and surprisingly I have been able to find good deals. So, Trump can go take a long walk off a short pier. He has no importance over my life. And he never will. I very rarely watch the news and if I do, it's local. I'm glad Musk is standing up to Trump. Trump is a back stabber. Musk lost his own company and reputation thanks to Trump. But don't worry. Things have a way of working out, and they eventually will. Australia will do fine. Trump hasn't signed one decent agreement yet.
